As part of the Hotel Warszawa Art Fair, The Monopol gallery presents a selection of Basia Bańda’s works from 2006–2014.
Small, hand-sewn objects resemble stuffed toys, while the watercolours evoke illustrations from a children’s book. Beneath this seemingly pleasant aesthetic, however, lies ambiguity, brutality, and cruelty—bridging the worlds of humans and animals. Bańda’s “toys” are at times vulgar or mutilated, while the animals appear deformed, bleeding, and bloodthirsty.
The contrast between the saccharine visuals and the macabre content of these works leaves viewers unsettled.
